![]() I think Swift is really good and could have a giant year with the Eagles. I don’t love the D’Andre Swift running back swap-out for rookie Jahmyr Gibbs, who rotated mostly in college and did not gain 1,000 yards in any one season. My story for on how they saved one another. Ben Johnson has experienced too much failure. He was a head coach candidate this offseason and will be again if the Lions have similar results in 2023. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has made this offense must-watch TV with very clean execution, unpredictable play-calling and a high level of innovation. Their offense was extremely impressive for several reasons, including the resurgence of quarterback Jared Goff. The Lions created some offseason momentum by going 8-2 in the final 10 games of the 2022 season. The Packers don’t need to create any new drama after the last couple of years. The departures of veteran defensive linemen Jarran Reed and Dean Lowry this offseason will free up more opportunity for Wyatt, but his play thus far would make me nervous.ĭefensive coordinator Joe Barry needs to get this group playing well out of the gate while the new starting QB settles in. He flashed the speed and athletic ability that made him effective at Georgia versus pass-happy teams, but he lacked technique and discipline in defending the run game. Wyatt, on the other hand, played only 22 percent of the defensive snaps. He is very athletic, but his reads, reactions and footwork are a work in progress. Walker played 82 percent of the Packers’ snaps last season but chased shiny objects all over the field without rhyme or reason too often. But they need to get better play from last year’s two first-rounders, linebacker Quay Walker and defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt. They have supplemented the roster with two of their better players, cornerback Rasul Douglas and linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, the last couple of years. This would be keeping me awake if I were part of the team-building process in Green Bay.ĭepending on the week, the Packers have six home-grown, first-round picks who play regularly on defense. Veteran Preston Smith provides a schemed option but I’m talking speed, bend and a difference-maker who dictates offensive protection schemes. What would keep me awake, though, is how the Packers improve from 17th in the NFL in scoring defense, 27th in sacks (with 34, which is less than half of what the Eagles had last season) and 15th in opposing QB passer rating - having already blitzed the fourth-most in the league in 2022 and having no elite edge rushers in their group of outside linebackers. But how will LaFleur react as a leader when struggles arise? Trust me, there will be some rocky times this season. Or consulted on front-office moves, for that matter. He will not have a QB with more cachet than anyone in the building who has to be sold or convinced of anything. It will also be his team from a leadership standpoint more so than ever. ![]() ![]() ![]() This will truly be, for the first time, LaFleur’s offense from top to bottom. Jordan Love's time to shine with Packers is finally here: 'That’s what I signed up for' I think they are confident those numbers will improve, even without a Hall of Fame QB. The Packers were only 14th in scoring offense last season, averaging 24.7 points per game, and worst in their own division on converting third downs. Remember: They have seen way more of him, to date, than the rest of us. Overall, I bet general manager Brian Gutekunst and coach Matt LaFleur are feeling confident about Love. Most of the outside world is focused on whether Jordan Love is good enough to fill the quarterback seat vacated by Aaron Rodgers, traded to the Jets in April. My prior analysis: AFC North, NFC East and AFC East. Here is how I see each team, listed in predicted order of finish based on where each stands today. Time will tell as to how this plays out on the football field, but when you put all these factors together, it won’t be surprising to see where my money is for the 2023 season in the old “Black and Blue” division.
